HieFo Corporation is a California-based company specializing in the production and development of high-efficiency Indium Phosphide (InP) photonic devices for the optical communication industry. Our journey began with a management buyout (MBO) of wafer fabrication and chip-related assets from EMCORE Corporation. By acquiring these assets and re-hiring key scientists, engineers, and operators, HieFo has inherited over 40 years of optoelectronic innovation in InP chip design and manufacturing as an Integrated Device Manufacturer (IDM).
HieFo stands for high efficiency photonics, addressing the growing demand for higher optical output power and lower electrical power consumption. Our advanced photonic devices are supplied to leading optical module and component manufacturers, enabling them to enhance their product offerings and improve competitiveness. We perform high-volume wafer processing of InP-based devices and possess unique technologies and intellectual property rights in device design, epitaxial growth, and wafer processing.Our Gain Chip technology has been a fundamental building block of the tunable laser market for over 15 years, setting industry standards for performance and efficiency.

Development Path
1980
Amnon Yariv laid the groundwork for semiconductor lasers and optical waveguides, establishing foundational technologies for the industry.
2000
Lucent Technologies acquired the relevant assets related to Yariv's pioneering work.
2002
Agere was spun off from Lucent focusing on optoelectronics.
2003
Emcore acquired Agere's optoelectronics business.
2024
HieFo successfully acquired chips business and InP wafer fab operations through MBO.
